Calico Farms:
This week we have a brand new item on the market which we sold out of at our in person market today…strawberry sugar!
Our strawberry sugar is the perfect way to infuse scrumptious vanilla flavor into all of your baking or beverages – tea, lemonade, you name it.
We take organic raw cane sugar, freeze dried organic strawberries, then run it through the food processor until perfectly blended then jar for you.
Need more ideas? Infuse into butter, rim cocktail/mocktail glasses, sprinkle on Frech toast or bake into cookies, muffins cake for the most delicious strawberry flavors throughout. Sold in 8 or 16 oz jars.
Also new this week are our blackberry lime scones – always dairy-free & organic like our other products, loaded with fresh blackberries & lime zest & packaged in 3-packs. Grab a pack today and enjoy!
Safe and Sound Soap Company:
Several new items added this week!
I have 2 new small batch soap scents! Rejuvenating Lemon Tumeric, and Lavender Clay. The Rejuvenating Lemon Tumeric is the perfect summertime soap. It’s made with the same base as our lavender clay soap, but with tumeric added. How does turmeric benefit the skin? Turmeric is filled with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. It can increase blood flow, and help with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Also turmeric is anti-inflammatory, and has brightening properties to help diminish dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The Lavender clay is made with coconut oil and tallow, with kaolin clay and aloe vera. Kaolin is a mineral clay known for its ability to absorb oil. Because of its oil-absorbing abilities, kaolin clay can help visibly deep clear pores and mattify skin. Both of these soaps are small batch soaps so there are only a select few available. Hurry and add one to your cart today!
I also added a Safe and Sound Starter Basket. If you have been wanting to try some of my products but don’t know where to start, this basket is perfect for you! Plus I’ve taken $1 off of each item so you’ll be saving money at the same time! You’ll get one 64 oz. Laundry Soap, one Whipped Sugar Scrub, one Cleaning Spray, one Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer Spray, and one Detox Bath Bomb. These also make great housewarming and wedding gifts!

MISC MARKET NOTES
Curry was a bad word in my world for many years. I’m pretty sure it happened because a certain Mr. insisted I try this “delicious curry” once and I spent the rest of my meal in agony and unable to taste anything after that.
Thankfully at some time and some place I learned that not all currys are created equal and do not require suffering. Even better, I learned to like this relatively easy one pot meal. A family favorite for us to this day is a canned version of Green Tomato Curry that makes for yummy quick dinners year round. (This is a recipe I’ll be happy to share with anyone who requests it!)
With so many marvelous vegetables available to us right now I thought it would be a good time to look into this dish as pretty much any meat and any vegetable can be used in curry. Tather than re-invent the wheel, what follows is from Taste of Home. There’s a lot of information in the link including an adaptable recipe
The word “curry”has come to mean many things over the years, as Indian food traveled from the subcontinent to other countries. The spicy, flavorful Indian curry from your favorite takeout joint is most likely a British invention, brought back by soldiers returning from the subcontinent who incorporated the flavors they’d grown to love into a simple one-pot dish. This dish was heavily inspired by the North Indian version of a curry, using similar flavors and meats. Curry spice was invented by the Brittish to capture the flavors of India, however using fresh spices is much tastier when cooking.
Indian curry is one of those dishes that’s easy to make your own! You can customize our recipe with any of the following variations.
Vegetables: Instead of using meat, swap in 6 cups of vegetables, chopped into bite-sized pieces. Our favorite combinations are cubed potatoes and frozen peas, cauliflower and carrots or green beans and eggplant, but feel free to have some fun with it! You can skip the browning step and add them after the initial 5-minute simmer (when you would be adding the browned meat back to the curry). Simmer until the veggies are tender when pierced with a fork but not mushy, from 5 to 15 minutes.
Legumes: Adding legumes (like chickpeas, lentils or beans) is a fantastic way to add plant-based protein to your curry. If you’re using dried beans, you’ll want to cook them ahead of time, but canned beans that have been drained and rinsed work just fine here. Like the veggies, skip the browning step and add the beans after the 5-minute simmer. Cook them until they’re warmed through, about 5 minutes.
Fish or shrimp: Give your curry a coastal flair by swapping in seafood! Cut a pound of firm white fish (like cod or snapper) into bite-sized pieces, or use peeled and deveined shrimp. Since they only need 3 to 5 minutes to cook through, you can add the seafood at the end of the cook time and simmer until it’s just cooked through.
THANK YOU (again) to Wendy for managing Pickup during our last order cycle. And THANK YOU to everyone who was kind and gracious about the few hiccups that arose in your manager’s absence. We think everything (price adjustments, credits issued) has been handled but if something was missed please speak up as we’re all about making sure things are right. Our vendors and customers are the best and we care for of each of you.
Katherine’s Kitchen Can you believe we’re almost nearing the end of June?
Here’s a throwback to an old-timey saying you might have heard: “Get yourself a bride by June”. Did you ever wonder, “Why by June? Might’nt you just as well have a bride by May, or by September?” The origins of the term you never would have guessed. . . oh, wait, you guessed it? Yep! It has agricultural origins!
Well, first you need the missus free to plant the corn come springtime. No sense getting her distracted with thoughts of weddings at that crucial time! Then at last there’s that little lull just after the rush of planting, when everything slows down and warms up; that’s June. Late summer you need the new bride’s help weeding and canning and harvesting, and that never stops till winter when things finally “chill out”. Now she’ll be getting along towards nine months pregnant with that newlywed baby by March! So you’d better have that baby quick before the springtime weather sets in, because once it’s truly spring you pull out all the stops and throw everything at your soil that you can. Seems crazy by “modern” standards; imagine basing your wedding plans around an expected pregnancy and the seasonal farming work! Yet this was such an ordinary way for people to think back then, it even became a common saying that was shortened down to “bride by June”. Now, with pregnancy an inconvenience, babies an afterthought, and agriculture not a thought at all, modern folks might feel surprised to know how different the “normal” world used to be. . . and maybe realize that modern life is hardly “normal” after all!
~Katherine’s Kitchen
Mt. Moriah Farms: Things are starting to fall into a nice routine. Can’t believe our newborn is almost two months old. The day he turns two months old our toddler will turn two! Lately with the lack of time to get everything done I’d like to accomplish in a day, it’s made me truly think about what is the most important tasks and ensure those get done. That thought has led to several others and I just want to say we are so thankful to get to do what we do – raising our boys up on a farm where family is held high and friends are so eager to help. Many of those friends were met while out and about in the community. Thank you for being our community y’all. We appreciate each and every customer we have and hope you feel like a part of our family.
We look forward to seeing you next Friday at one of our pickup locations. Thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Martin's Farmstand: U-Pick Saturday June 22, 7 a.m.
Good afternoon everyone! The Greenwood family has almost finished the transition to the farm and we are looking forward to getting to know all of you and turning our full attention to learning from the Martin family and serving you all as a community. The Martin family has been incredibly accomadating and are a wealth of information. We feel incredibly blessed to partner alongside them on the farm.
Fun fact, Desiree Greenwood is in her last year of Midwifery School and will be a practicing midwife by next summer! We are so proud of all her work and look forward to seeing her in action next year.
Now down to business. The berry patches are open Saturday June 22 for picking! We open at 7 a.m. and will have picking available until the patch is picked. We have a lot of ripe berries available and with the weather having cooled some expect good picking conditions. We also have a number of Red Rasberries available for U-Pick! They are ready very early and will be on a first come first serve basis along side the strawberries. The u-pick price is $3.75 a pint. If you have any questions feel free to call us! 315-265-1246
Hours for u-pick are Monday starting at 5 PM; Wednesday, starting 2 PM (no morning picking on Monday’s and Wednesdays); Saturday, starting 7 AM. This repeats through out the whole season. The patch closes when the berries are all picked or at 8 pm on Monday and 6 PM on Wednesday and Saturday.
When you arrive you do not need to stop at the stand to weigh your containers if you know the empty weight already. Also you do not need to stop if you are picking into standard Quart containers.
You have the option of bringing your own containers or buying empties from us. Quart boxes 25 cents each. If you are buying empty containers from us please pay when you get them rather than after you are done picking to minimize confusion as to what is going on.
NO DOGS in the field or stand areas. We will be using the same random picking pattern that we did last year. This means that you may start anyplace you wish in the patches that are open as long as you are not cutting in front of someone. It is mandatory that when you are picking that all the ripe berries are picked as you move No roaming or grazing type picking. A section of row must either be picked or not picked when you leave. We will be scouting the patch and keep suggesting where you will find good picking.
Pricing u-pick: $5 per Quart if less than 8 quarts and $3.40 per quart if more than 8 quarts; $27.20 for an 8 quart tray. All containers are expected to well filled but not heaped. We will adjust prices up or down as needed for over or under-filled containers. By the pound price is $2.30/# (limited to bigger containers or larger amounts). If you pay by credit card there is a 3% surcharge added to the above prices and you will need to use the inside checkout station rather than outside express options. Matthew

The Thomas Family has listed aloe and pothos plants this week and Backwoods Plants always has some interesting specimens like jade and desert rose. Bluff Top has a great selection of fresh herbs; try some fresh basil, chives, parsley, or spearmint. R&D has added a pork sausage this week and maybe some flank steak would make a great weeknight dinner? Look for fresh red onions from Lucky Star, grab a bundle of celosia plants from Michael’s garden or check out a value pack from C3 Beef! We are trying something new this week with our most recent vendor, Justin’s Produce. Look for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and squash in the vegetables category!

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!
PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. in Clayton, Clarkesville, or Gainesville.
If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION after you finish the checkout process, then your order is NOT complete. Head back to the market page, and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.
