Growers News:

WELCOME Foster Bakery: New to our Market, highly recommended by NashPhilly.

Do you like bread? Enjoy this staple guilt-free by buying a whole wheat loaf from me. Unlike many commercial bakeries that use bromated/carcinogenic ingredients, I use simple and minimally processed ingredients to make a delicious and filling bread. Bread made from whole wheat flour contains greater amounts of protein, fiber, and vitamins. 2-3 slices meets 15% of your daily iron needs and over a quarter of the recommended fiber intake. Whole wheat bread is also a great food to aid weight loss (ask me: I lost 20 pounds after I started making this bread)! This loaf makes approximately 10-12 slices + 2 endpieces. Slice as you go for best quality (unless if you plan to freeze it). Since my bread doesn’t contain any preservatives, it’s best to consume or freeze within 3-4 days of picking up. The bags are freezer friendly.

Safe and Sound Soap Co.: This week I’ve added a new product for Mother’s Day. My Citrus Gift Baskets! Each basket comes with an Orange Bergamot Room Spray and Hand Sanitizer, as well as a Lemon Zest Body Scrub and a Citrus Bar Soap! Each item is tucked into a cute gold wire basket with some decorative paper shreds. You won’t have to worry about buying a gift bag because it’s already in a cute basket! I also decided to continue running my Laundry soap sale. This will be the last week that I’ll have them discounted for a while so if you’ve been thinking about ordering some now is the time!
I also have added two new scents to my Car Air Freshener collection. The Lavender car freshener is scented entirely using essential oils. It’s relaxing and light, the perfect scent to relieve stress on your morning commute to work. The Suit and Tie Car Air Freshener is scented using the highest quality blend of non toxic, vegan, phthalate and paraben free fragrance oils. It smells very similar to mahogany teakwood, so if that is one of your favorite scents you’ll love this one.

Yentz Family Farm:

TWO gluten-free options for you this week: Peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip & chocolate crinkle, both equally delicious in their own ways!

New this week are our wild blueberry thumbprint cookies – a rich, buttery cookie with a generous dollop of wild blueberry jam baked right into the center.

All cookies are sold in 6-packs, and are organic & vegan.

Our mild organic salsa is here – canned in 16 oz jars & perfect for dipping, topping tacos, nachos, eggs, etc. We use fresh tomatoes and there’s no added sugar, just freshness in a jar. This has become a customer favorite.

New this week to our wellness items are our citrus shower steamers – so refreshing, with grapefruit & lemon essential oils to turn your shower into an aromatherapy spa experience. Sold in a resealable 2-pack.

Valentine Cottage: Getting ready to start gearing up for the fresh veggies coming out of the Garden this week. Back in stock this week freeze dried local strawberries, freeze dried apple bites, turnip greens powder, freeze dried pineapple bites and one of my favorites freeze dried sugar snap peas.

Rainbow Hill Farm. Several live produce plants available and Strawberry Plants, more to come. Excited to be back this season.

Emerald Acres: Delicious Lettice Mix and Lettuce Mixed Heads, Sugar Snap Peas, Spinach, Spring Mix Flowers and Strawberries.

Tailwynds Farm: We have some new cuts of beef available. We have a Picanha Roast Cut. This cut can be grilled to perfection, has wonderful flavor and a similar texture to a sirloin steak and to top it off try a homemade fresh strawberry pie for dessert. If you have not tried a Tomahawk steak we still have some available. We have had amazing reviews on these cuts with customers saying it was the best and most tender steak they have ever eaten. Fire up those grills and give one a try. We have many crops already growing and plan to have all the farm fresh vegetables available as soon as they start coming in.

NashPhilly: Several prepared items in the Soup, Seasonal Side Dishes and Noodles, Pasta, Italian Sauses Category. Perfect for your upcoming Mother’s Day meal or this weeks meals.

Martin's Farmstand:  Sunshine and Planting

The farmstand will be open this afternoon from noon till 5 pm.
This is the last Saturday of winter hours for this season. The asparagus is coming up. I estimate that we will begin harvesting asparagus starting sometime during the middle/ late part of next week (Thursday or Friday???) depending on how warm the weather is and how much sun we have. Summer hours begin when we harvest the first asparagus. The plan for 2024 is to be open from 10 am till 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday. We will be closed Sunday and Monday. This is the same schedule as last year.
In the early spring the sunshine makes a big differance on soil temps as the cold underneath is pushing up and the warmth from the sun is pushing down. If it is cloudy the soil tends to be cold in the seed/ root zone. Of course cold rains bring the soil temps down quickly also. When you are planting things like sweet corn, beans, sqush etc and are using organic/ untreated seed it is important that they begin to sprout as soon as possible. During the first few days after you plant them if the do not sprout quickly they are likely to rot or just to disappear. Once they are sprouted even just a tiny bit they are somewhat secure. During this time of the year I prepare the soil for the heat loving seeds but do not plant right away. I let it rain and in general sit tight. I am watching the weather forcast for about 3 days of bright sun (ideally somewhat warm also). Then I plant. Seeds that sprout in the cool soil (lettuce, peas, beets, dill, cilantro, spinach etc) can be planted anytime you get to it. If the weather conditions are not ideal sometimes I also presprout seeds in the house till the sprout tip is just showing and then set them out by hand. Again once they are sprouted they are much less likely to disappear or rot.
For us, this week has been dominated by lots of planting. We set all the onions, parsley, leeks, early cabbage, lettuce etc out along with various seeds. We plant with hope. God, we pray that you send your rain and sunshine and give us our daily bread. Daniel
